Fire-fighting cost tops $8M at Jarbidge

ELKO - Firefighters continued to extinguish hot spots Tuesday on the East Slide Rock Ridge Fire, which to date has cost an estimated $8.4 million to fight.

The lightning-sparked fire, which was originally managed with a technique to reduce fuel loads of dead or diseased trees, has held fairly steady at 54,545 acres - or 85 square miles.

It is still estimated at 50 percent contained and fire-fighting resources were reduced when a Type III Incident Management team transitioned to replace the Type I team that was fighting the fire at its peak.

Several small smoke columns were visible within the perimeter Tuesday as pockets of timber continued to burn. Individual and group torching of trees is expected to continue until significant rain or snow falls.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to use extreme caution along roadways adjacent to the fire, especially along the Pole Creek and Canyon Pockets roads. Fire crews have cut and will continue to cut burned trees posing immediate safety hazards.

" Heck, they had to let something burn out of control. If they don't spend the money in this fiscal year, it gets cut back next year. Got to keep all those government contractors in the air and happy.

Idiots. "
