Late-night fire claims three vehicles, one dog

Ross Andreson/Elko Daily Free Press A firefighter from Nevada Division of Forestry battles a blaze early this morning about one mile north of Nevada Youth Training Center. A fifth-wheel trailer and two other vehicles were burned before firefighters extinguished the blaze.

ELKO — A fifth-wheel trailer, two vehicles and a dog were claimed by a blaze that started when straw insulation was left too close to the exhaust of a generator Wednesday night.

At 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nevada Division of Forestry firefighters, the Elko City Fire Department, Lee Engine Company and Elko County sheriff’s deputies responded to a fire call in an area north of Nevada Youth Training Center east of town.

According to Elko County sheriff’s Lt. Doug Gailey, the fifth-wheel is registered to Earl Echohawk.

No one was injured by the fire; however, a Labrador retriever was killed as it was chained in close proximity to the trailer.

A second trailer nearby was undamaged.

" having been out at the fire, Charlie, the yellow lab that died in the fire was NOT chained but would NOT come out of the trailer when called. We were hollering for Charle to come out he but would not leave the 5th wheel. We attempted to enter the 5th wheel to get Charlie but the smoke was to intense to enter.

How do I know. I'm the owner of the 2nd trailer that wasn't damaged and attempted to extinguish the blaze before it got out of hand. "
