Melchora “Menchu” Zubieta Fagoaga was born on January 6, 1945, in Lesaca, Navarra, Spain, to Casimira and Martin Zubieta. She died on August 18, 2017, in Reno, Nevada of cancer.
Menchu came to the United States at the age of 28. She met and married Ysidro Fagoaga on April 11, 1975 in Elko, Nevada. Their first home was in the upstairs of the Chilton residence. They later built a home on Sage Street in Elko where Menchu lived until she moved to Reno in 2015 to live with her daughter.
Menchu worked at the Nevada Dinner House, Biltoki and in several professional offices in Elko for more than 40 years. She had a strong, Basque work ethic and was loved for her cheerful nature.
Menchu is survived by her daughter, Isabel, of Reno; sister, Isabel, of Lesaca, Spain; brothers-in-law, Jose and Antonio (Gina) Fagoaga, all of Elko; nieces, nephews and her many friends in Elko.
Menchu was predeceased by her husband, Ysidro, her parents, and a brother, Juan.
Menchu requested that no services be held. She will be buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Elko.
Heaven will be a better place … clean bathrooms and plenty of rice pudding and flan.
