The Mineral Maniacs and the Magic Hardhat

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration is promoting the first in a children’s book series “exploring the exciting and educational world of mining, geology and engineering.”

Finalists in the 2016 SME Move Mining Competition, Ryan and Jules Miles, took the stage during the SME Conference & Expo in February with a presentation on how their children’s book, “The Mineral Maniacs and the Magic Hardhat,” could help to change the public’s perception of mining.

The couple, also known as Team Miles of Smiles, caught the eye of both Climax Molybdenum Co., a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan, and Ryan Miles’ employer, the Electrum Group, to sponsor the publishing of their first book.

In the months since the Move Mining Competition, Miles of Smiles has completed the novel, put the finishing touches on illustrations, and had it published and made available through the SME bookstore and other vendors. The novel is also currently being translated into Spanish. Their website,, has more information about the authors.

“This fun and educational book will excite even the youngest readers, and will inspire future generations of innovators, educators and engineers to be forces of positive change in the world,” stated a release from SME.

SME is a professional society whose members represent all professions serving the mining, minerals and underground construction industries in more than 100 countries.
