BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Medicare in Elko Work Group is working on both short-term and long-term solutions to the problems of Elko seniors not being able to find a doctor accepting new Medicare patients.
In the short-term, the Battle Mountain Clinic offers same-day appointments or at least next-day appointments for patients using Medicare and Medicaid.
“We know this is not the best solution,” said Work Group Chairman Larry Hyslop. “We would rather see Elko seniors seeing local doctors, but for now this may be a solution for Elko seniors.”
Seniors can call 775-635-2424 to make an appointment.
If seniors need transportation to Battle Mountain, they can call 385-8870. Based on the amount of need, the group may be able to find transportation.
This clinic is one of several choices listed in the Work Group’s flier “Where Can I Go to See a Doctor? Medicare Providers, Urgent Care and Senior Services” available at the Elko Senior Center and from their website.
The Work Group recently held its third meeting, where some long-term solutions were also discussed. Some ideas being pursued are a UNR School of Medicine teaching clinic in Elko, local doctors seeing Medicare patients at the Nevada Health Center, and the Work Group providing help with local doctor recruitment.
The next meeting is Nov. 4. For more information on the group, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
