CARLIN — A California man died in a fatal crash between a semi-truck and car Sunday near Emigrant Summit.
Fredrick Brooks, 62, of Sacramento, California, was driving a blue Chevrolet Impala west on Interstate 80 around 12:15 p.m., said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Stewart.
Brooks was behind a semi-truck driven by James Apgar 65, of Iona, Idaho. Both vehicles were going uphill in the slow-lane.
For unknown reasons, Brooks did not change lanes and struck the back of the semi-truck, attaching his vehicle partially underneath the trailer — no rolling occurred. Stewart said there wasn’t any sign of braking from Brooks’ vehicle.
It appears Brooks was maintaining the speed limit, and Apgar was going a little slower.
Apgar was not injured and wearing his seat belt.
Brooks was not wearing a seat belt. Stewart said he sustained fatal injuries and was found dead at the scene.
At this time, NHP does not believe drugs and alcohol were involved. Instead, driver inattention was cited as the cause.
