ELKO – The driver of a stolen vehicle led police on a high-speed chase in the tree streets Wednesday night, then escaped by fleeing on foot.

Elko police Lt. Mike Palhegyi said an officer was attempting to make a traffic stop on Cedar Street involving a Ford Explorer with expired plates. The driver led police on a chase at speeds up to 70 mph. The Ford hit two vehicles before crashing into a fence on Seventh Street near the cemetery.

Palhegyi said the driver and a passenger exited the vehicle. While the passenger complied with police, the driver took off running. He was described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black stocking cap and blue jeans.

After the chase, the car was reported stolen.
