ELKO – An Elko woman was apprehended after allegedly breaking into a vehicle in the Red Lion parking lot.
Crystal L. Gilliland, 38, was arrested on a charge of grand larceny of an automobile Monday morning when Elko police arrived at the scene after getting a call claiming that Gilliland was going through the vehicle.
According to Police Lt. Ty Trouten the woman tried to walk away from the vehicle once she saw police approaching and claimed she attempted to enter the car to pet a dog that was inside the car.
Trouten said Gilliland appeared to be looking for a way to get the car started.
Police interviewed the car’s owner.
“He had left the vehicle about an hour before and secured the vehicle and he did have a dog inside the vehicle with the windows down,” he said. “He came out and noticed she was in the driver seat of the vehicle and going through the console and the glove box and it looked like she was attempting to start the vehicle.”
Gilliland’s bail was set at $20,000.
