ELKO — Accused hit-and-run driver Daniel Vasu waived his preliminary hearing in Elko Justice Court and was bound over to district court.
He is charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, a category B felony.
If found guilty, the charge is punishable with a minimum of two years to a maximum of 20 years in prison with the stipulation that the sentence may not be suspended or probation granted.
Vasu is alleged to have driven a Jeep Cherokee SUV that hit Elko Federal Credit Union President Doug Schwartz outside of Machi’s Saloon & Grill June 23.
Schwartz died of his injuries at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital.
Vasu and was arrested the following morning after a photo of the vehicle taken by witnesses was released on news and social media outlets.
Vasu’s attorney, Sherburne Macfarlan, was not available for comment by press time.
Vasu’s arraignment is set for May 22 in Elko District Court.
