ELKO – An Elko woman is facing charges of embezzlement and grand larceny after allegedly getting caught stealing from Raley’s.
Patrice J. McDarment, 46, was caught by the supermarket’s internal security stealing money and merchandise over the last four months of her employment, according to Elko Police Sgt. Anthony Matthews.
Mathews said it is common for stores to gather information internally before approaching law enforcement with their findings.
“They found out because the money from the register wasn’t matching up with whatever deposits they had into the safe,” he said. “From there, they usually conduct their own investigation, check surveillance and try to figure out a time frame to figure out which employees were working at that time, especially in a place like Raley’s where there are numerous employees.”
It can be difficult for businesses to get back their lost profits even after an arrest has been made. Mathews said the money is often spent by the time a suspect is caught.
“A lot of time with the embezzlement cases they don’t want to get caught so they take a little bit at a time and they spend it elsewhere so they don’t have the money,” he said.
