ELKO – All registered Elko County Democrats are encouraged to attend the Elko County precinct caucuses and county convention Feb. 24 beginning at 9 a.m. at Adobe Middle School, 3375 Jennings Way.
Independent and Republican voters wanting to register as Democrats are also invited to attend. Voter registration will be available the day of the caucus.
“This is political participation at the grass roots level,” said Steve Anderson, chair of the Elko County Democratic Central Committee. “Anyone interested in being involved is welcome to attend. We will be voting on resolutions and selecting delegates to the Nevada State Democratic Party Convention being held in Reno June 23-24.”
In non-presidential election years, county caucuses are held to elect delegates to the county and state convention; elect members of the state central committee; and to receive and discuss proposed platform resolutions. Any registered Democrat who will be 18 or older by Nov. 6, 2018, can attend.
Local Dems will gather at 9 a.m. to register for the caucus, which will be called to order at 10 a.m. After a caucus chair and secretary are elected, local candidates will have an opportunity to address the group, then delegates and alternates to the county convention will be elected. In turn, these delegates will choose delegates/alternates to the state convention (which will be held on June 23-24 in Reno).
Dems interested in serving on the local or state Democratic Central Committees will also be chosen. Additionally, participants will be able to submit any proposed platform resolutions.
Elko County Democrats meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital conference room. The reinvigorated ECDCC has been working the past year on increasing visibility in the community, hosting candidate forums, reaching out to potential voters and creating alliances with community groups.
