ELKO — A 31-year-old woman was shot dead early Friday morning at an address on Old Hot Springs Road.
Officers were dispatched at 1:30 a.m. to a report of gun shots in the area, according to Elko police Lt. Richard Genseal.
When officers arrived on scene, they found 31-year-old Casey Tervort, of Elko, shot in the chest, Elko police Captain Will Lehmann said.
The suspect, Matthew Deacon, 22, was taken into custody and booked on an open murder charge at the Elko County Jail, Lehmann said.
Deacon is ineligible for bail.
Tervort was staying with a friend in an adjacent trailer and went over to Deacon’s home, according to witness statements, Lehmann said.
She knocked on Deacon’s door and Deacon opened the door and allegedly shot her. Deacon ran from the scene and police released a dog to track him, Lehmann said.
Deacon saw the dog and, not wanting to engage it, doubled back to the trailer and surrendered to police, Lehmann said.
Elko County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to assist in locating the suspect but were canceled en route, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deacon was booked for battery domestic violence in July of 2011 and arrested by the Carlin Police Department in March 2010 for DUI.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Elko Police Department at 777-7310.
