ELKO — When the sun sets over Elko Thursday, a ring of twinkling lights will light up Lamoille Summit.

As part of Elko’s Relay for Life event, Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital plans to surround the 1/2 mile circumference of the hospital driveway with a pink luminaria display.

“We thought ... it would be such a neat visual reminder that the relay is coming up that weekend,” said NNRH Business Development Director Kerry Aguirre.

More than 300 bags — each filled with a pink candle — are needed to surround the hospital driveway. Bags are on sale at the hospital’s gift shop for $5 apiece.

Individuals who purchase the bags can decorate them from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday in the hospital’s cafeteria. Those interested can call 748-2163 during normal business hours to order a luminaria bag.

Each year a luminaria ceremony — dedicated to those who have died from cancer — occurs at the Elko High School track in conjunction with Elko’s Relay for Life event, though this is the first year the luminaria bags are to be incorporated elsewhere in the community.

“That luminaria ceremony, there’s not a dry eye in the house. It’s a very touching ceremony,” said Relay for Life Entertainment Chair Tera Hooiman.

The hospital team is also in charge of the luminaria ceremony July 21 at the Elko High School track.

“It’s such a nice personal touch,” said Aguirre of the relay ceremony, who added the hospital wanted to do something similar on a larger level to gain the attention of all travelers between Elko and Spring Creek in advance of the event.

“Everybody tries to think of different things to capture people’s interest so they’ll play closer attention to the message,” said Aguirre, who added she thought “it’d be great because (for) everyone who comes back and forth over the summit, there’s nothing else to see.”

To purchase a luminaria, or for more information, call 748-2163. All proceeds raised go to the 2012 American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
