ELKO — A hitchhiker trying to get a ride to Salt Lake City was picked up by a Utah man Friday afternoon, only to be left bloodied and beaten south of West Wendover.

William P. Lose, 35, of Taylorsville was arrested in West Wendover for attempted murder and battery with the use of a deadly weapon.

“He evidently had picked up a hitchhiker and agreed to give him a ride to Salt Lake City,” said Undersheriff Clair Morris.

Lose had picked up Wayne Gattke, address unknown, at a truck stop in West Wendover, Morris said. Lose was traveling south on Highway 93A, when he pulled over onto Blue Lake south of West Wendover. Lose allegedly pistol whipped the victim and left him badly beaten.

“He lost a lot of blood,” Morris said.

Gattke was able to walk one and a half miles to the highway and hitch a ride back to West Wendover, where he was later transported to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

Sheriff’s deputies later arrived at the crime scene and found a lot of blood.

“The gun was still there at the crime scene,” Morris said.

Lose was arrested that afternoon at the Burger King in West Wendover. Deputies found blood in his vehicle, which was confiscated. He was booked into the Elko County Jail with bail listed at $110,000.
