Editor: I would like to voice my thoughts about the local citizens when it comes to emergency responding vehicles.
This past Tuesday I was driving on Fifth Street when I noticed approximately two blocks away coming towards me was a vehicle with lights and sirens. The moment I had an opportunity to pull over safely, I did.
Yet, there were ignorant drivers in the responder’s lane in front of that emergency vehicle that refused to pull over until the sirens where right behind them. Then they swerved frantically to get out of the way (like they were trying to avoid getting hit).
It is people like this who complain that it takes emergency vehicles too long to get to accidents, fires, etc.; however, if they stop and truly think for one second, they will realize that they are part of the problem.
So citizens of Elko and surrounding areas, I ask this of you now: When you see lights and sirens in your rear-view mirrors or in front of you, please, please, please! Pull over the moment you have a safe chance and allow these emergency responding vehicles to get through traffic and get to the emergency they have been called out to.
Remember, at some point it could be you or your family member in need of their services. So let them get where they are going without making it more difficult or time-consuming for them.
