ELKO — Deputies believe an Elko resident who drove out North Fifth Street Friday night got stuck, tried to walk back to town and died overnight of exposure, according to Sheriff Jim Pitts.

Claire Smith, 58, died in what Sheriff’s deputies are investigating as an accident, Pitts said.

A group of people driving out for recreation found the woman’s body early Saturday morning.

“That road gets a lot of traffic even this time of year,” Pitts said.

Initial investigations indicate that the woman got her truck stuck on the dirt road and when she tried to walk out, she slipped on some ice and hit her head, Pitts said.

Deputies believe that she got back up and walked a bit further before laying down and dying of exposure, Pitts said. An autopsy has been arranged for later this week.

My condolences to the family. How absolutely terrible. But maybe some good can come of it as a lesson for the rest of us. A fundamental piece of advice from rescue organizations is except for a very short and safe walk to safety, NEVER leave your vehicle if you get stuck. Your odds of being rescued drop dramatically as you leave shelter to risk facing the elements on your own. It is also much more likely to be found in a car than, as this tragic event shows, alone in the snow.
