The Local Animal Shelter Support Organization (LASSO) recently lost a great friend and animal advocate. Dr. Jack O. Walther was known and loved by many, including the countless animals he cared for during his long and distinguished veterinary career.

LASSO appreciates the many hours Dr. Walther volunteered to the Elko Animal Shelter & Dumke-Weeks Spay/Neuter Clinic. A true Nevadan, Dr. Walther rolled up his sleeves and helped transform the “Dog Pound” into a modern, well equipped Spay/Neuter Clinic and expanded Animal Shelter facility.

Due to Dr. Walther’s vision and leadership, the City of Elko Animal Shelter, Dumke-Weeks Spay/Neuter Clinic, and LASSO recently celebrated over 4,000 spay/neuters! This translates into lower numbers of animal intakes, lower euthanasia rates, and more adoptions. Dr. Walther would have been proud to see his vision become a reality!

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” We believe the same concept applies to Elko and look forward to continuing Dr. Walther’s legacy of animal advocacy and community service.
