RENO – The Wells and Eureka girls basketball teams punched their tickets for the 1A state tournament, the Lady Leopards winning the 1A North regional title over the Lady Vandals by a final score of 41-37.

Plenty of other teams had their chances to march on but saw their seasons come to a close before the regional final round.


Northern-East No. 1 seed Jackpot entered the regional tournament with a 10-0 record.

The Jaguars opened the tourney with a 55-49 victory over Northern-West No. 4 Virginia City in the quarterfinal round, but Jackpot’s offense was shut down in a 44-36 loss to Northern-West No. 2 Whittell in the semifinal round.

The Warriors dismantled Northern-West No. 1 and defending state champion Mineral County by a final score of 64-55 in the championship.

The Serpents reached the 1A North final with an 85-51 victory in the semifinals over Northern-East No. 2 McDermitt, which opened the tournament with a 63-51 win against Northern-West No. 3 Sierra Lutheran.

Owyhee, the Northern-East No. 4 seed, was drilled 89-34 by Mineral County in the quarterfinal round.

Whittell opened with a commanding 71-37 victory over Northern-East No. 3 Eureka in the quarters.


In the 1A North regional championship, Northern-East No. 4 Wells took down Northern-East No. 3 Eureka by a final score of 41-37.

The Lady Leopards reached the final with a 67-51 victory over Northern-East No. 2 and two-time defending state champion Owyhee in the semifinal round – the Lady Braves downing Northern-West No. 3 Smith Valley in a close, 63-56 affair in the quarterfinal – the Lady Vandals escaping their semifinal contest against Northern-East No. 1 and unbeaten McDermitt in a double-overtime battle by a final score of 70-67.

The Lady Bulldogs reached the semifinal round with a convincing 59-18 blowout over Northern-West No. 4 Sierra Lutheran, while the Lady Vandals took down Northern-West No. 2 Coleville with ease in a 53-31 ballgame in the quarterfinal round.

Wells began their unlikely-on-paper march to a regional championship with a 48-37 victory over Northern-West No. 1 Mineral County (16-0) in the quarters.

The girls teams from the East dominated the action, all four teams (McDermitt, Owyhee, Eureka and Wells) eliminating the teams from the West in the quarterfinals.

State tournament

The Wells and Eureka girls will be the only representatives of the East in the state tournament, the North No. 1 Lady Leopards facing South No. 2 Round Mountain at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinal – North No. 2 Eureka playing South No. 1 Pahranagat Valley at 11 a.m. Friday.

Both North teams for the boys bracket hail from the West, Whittell taking the No. 1 seed against South No. 2 Spring Mountain at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

North No. 2 Mineral County will look to rebound and defend its state championship, opening with South No. 1 Pahranagat Valley in a rematch of the 2017 state final at 12:45 p.m. Friday.

The 1A state championship for the girls will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by the boys title game at 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

All 1A state games will take place at Lawlor Event Center in Reno.
