SPARKS – Despite only allowing 41 points, the Lady Indians gave up nearly half the total in the fourth quarter, and the Elko girls basketball team could not overcome its own offensive woes.
After starting the season 2-0, Elko fell for the first time Saturday to Division 4A program Douglas at Spanish Springs High School by a final score of 41-37.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the hoop for the first three periods.
The Lady Indians edged the Lady Tigers 9-8 in the first quarter.
Douglas reached double digits in the second period and posted 13 points, while the Lady Indians mustered just six.
At halftime, Douglas led 21-15.
Elko came up with a great defensive effort in the third period – allowing just two points — but the Lady Indians still posted a single-digit effort themselves with a seven-point frame.
Entering the fourth quarter, Elko trailed by just one point at 23-22.
The good news for Elko was the fact the Lady Indians notched their highest-scoring frame of the ballgame in the fourth quarter – pouring in 15 points.
The bad news; Elko allowed 18 points to Douglas in the final eight minutes – the Lady Tigers edging Elko 41-37.
Senior Sariah Pulley came alive for the Lady Indians, scoring a team-high 15 points – eight coming in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers can thank senior Ashlynn Campbell in large part for their victory, as she poured in a game-high 22 points – scoring eight in the final period.
Douglas senior forward Karla Sanchez dropped all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, the Campbell-Sanchez duo combining to outscore the Lady Indians by themselves down the stretch.
Seniors Lexi Baum and Gabe Rowley each finished with seven points for the Lady Indians, while junior Alexis Elquist closed the game with five points.
A cause for concern for the Lady Indians is the fact that only five Elko players scored in the contest, as was the case for the Lady Tigers, but Douglas’ top-two scorers dropped 30 of the Lady Tigers’ 41 total points.
ELKO – 9 – 6 – 7 – 15 – 37 Total
DOUGLAS – 8 – 13 – 2 – 18 – 41 Total
Elko (2-1) will open league play of the Division 3A North on the road, facing early tests against the improving Lady Vaqueros at 6 p.m. Friday in Fernley and taking on the defending state champions – the Lady Greenwave – at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fallon.
