FALLON – Truckee swept Elko in three sets on Saturday to advance to the championship round of the NIAA 3A North Regional Volleyball Tournament at Fallon’s Elmo Dericco Gymnasium.

Elko, which had to go the distance on Friday to defeat South Tahoe in five sets, battled the Wolverines, but Truckee prevailed 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20.

Elko had only a short-lived lead in the first two sets, taking a 2-0 lead on two forced errors in the opening game before Truckee tied and then surged ahead. Elko, though, tied the set twice, 12-12 and 14-14, before Truckee outscored the Lady Indians 11-6.

In the second set, Truckee took a 3-2 lead on a pair of aces from server Madison Bromley, and Ryleigh Hogland connected on a kill from her right outside position. Bromley’s third ace resulted in a 5-2 lead.

Elko took advantage of four Truckee errors, three blocks — one each from Lexi Baum, Cassie Spence and Alexis Elquist — and a crosscourt kill from Elena Howe to tie Truckee at 12.

Down the stretch Kelly Cross had two kills, and Emma Cost caught Elko off-balance with a push to her left.

Hogland’s block and an Elko error on the serve accounted for Truckee’s final two points.

Elko struggled in the second set as Truckee took a huge lead, but the Lady Indians outscored the Wolverines in the final stretch 9-7.

Truckee played solid defense with Bromley blocking a return, and Hogland and Costa each recorded a kill.

In the second half of the set, Bromley had two kills and a block, but Truckee committed three forced errors that led to Elko’s final points. A long Elko return that bounced past Truckee’s back row ended the set.

Elko took the early lead against Truckee in the third set as Baum had a block and kill, while Elquist added a kill. Truckee trailed 7-6 before Elko returned the ball in the net to tie the game, and Cross and Bromley began to control the middle. Cross had two service points including an ace, and Bromley and Hogland each had a kill. Elko cut the lead to 20-18 late in the set on Howe’s kill and Mollie Gallagher’s block on the right side.

Truckee outscored Elko 5-2 to win the deciding set and match.

Cross nailed a kill down the middle, and Anika Penrose positioned herself for a kill for a 24-20 lead. On the next play, Elko’s short return in the net ended the match.
