SPRING CREEK – The Spring Creek Spartans charged into the season with a solid win Wednesday against the Moapa Valley Pirates, 75-67.
On Thursday, the Spartans faced The Meadows Mustangs in the first game of the Holiday Classic tournament. Spring Creek prevailed with a narrow win of 45-38.
The key player throughout the tournament for the Spartans was senior Levi Yaunick, who was also named to the all-tournament team for the Spartans. Senior Ryan Miner was also a high scorer.
On Friday, the Spartans opened the year with a 3-0 record against the West Wendover Wolverines, 62-58.
“The team executed well on offense and rebounded the ball well,” said Spartans’ coach Scott Carsrud.
On Saturday, the Spartans advanced to the championship game of the Holiday Classic, only to lose to the Boulder City Eagles, 62-32.
The Spartans’ key rebounder in the game was senior Thomas Ledford with 10, and the leading scorer was Levi Yaunick with 17 points.
“Their team was just physical and aggressive in their play,” said Carsrud. “Our legs were just gone by that point.”
The Spartans were down by seven at halftime in the game, but failed to gain momentum in their offense to score in the second half.
Spring Creek faced a similar struggle with the Lady Spartans under pressure in their loss by turning over the ball too many times to the opposing team.
The Spartans look to handle the ball with control on the court and plan to be more aggressive with their offensive plays and stronger on the boards for their next game.
Spring Creek managed to place second in the Holiday Classic tournament. Their season record currently stands at 3-1.
The Spartans’ next game is away at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Greenwave in Fallon.
