ELKO – Leaving town on vacation? Taking a long spa day? No need to take the kids to the kennel when Carrie’s Critter Care is available to cater to them at home.

“I have been doing this for 10 years,” owner Carrie Rowley said.

Rowley just received Gold for the Reader’s Choice Award for best pet services.

She grew up on a ranch in Montana and has always loved animals.

“I know animals and worked at a pet store for years called Pet Paradise,” she said.

She has also groomed for Grooming by Karen on and off for about 30 years. When Rowley first thought of starting her own business, she was also working at the hospital in the kitchen.

“I heard something on the radio that said the pet industry was in the billions of dollars,” she said.

She asked others what they thought about starting her own business and they told her to go for it. She still grooms, but over the years her pet-sitting gig has really expanded.

Rowley has taken care of most domestic animals, from cows to canaries and everything in between.

“I don’t really care for tarantulas much," she said, "but I can feed them."

Rowley also walks dogs.

“Walking dogs is one of my favorite things,” Rowley said. "I enjoy the sunrises and sunsets.”

Although she loves her job, like any occupation, there are down sides.

“It’s very demanding," she said. "There are no days off. You have to be responsible and reliable and willing to work long days in all kinds of weather.”

Rowley’s service area includes Elko and Spring Creek.
