ELKO — Jeff and Christy Teeter purchased Gateway RV effective January, becoming the recreational vehicle dealer’s third owners.

Jeff Teeter came to the area doing upstate fire and became a manager at Gateway RV. He said he was looking for “something different” when he discussed purchasing the business with owners Gilbert “Gig” and Susan Thornburg.

After working for Gateway RV since 1985, Gig Thornburg bought the business from the original owners, Dan and Shirleen Byington.

The Byingtons brought Gateway RV to Elko in 1973 after operating for a year in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Before parking at 1377 W. Idaho St., Gateway RV was open for business at two previous locations, on River Street and Fifth Street, according to Elko Daily Free Press archives.

Reflecting on the years, Thornburg said the biggest change in the business has been the rising price of RVs. When he started, the most expensive option there hovered at about $30,000; now the cost of an RV from the lot can exceed $100,000.

Teeter said the RV business constantly changes, and as the new owner of Gateway RV, he plans to continue rolling with the times to meet the needs of customers.
