June 3, 1936 – December 21, 2017

Heaven gained another angel, our beloved husband, dad, grandpa; great-grandpa, and uncle, Jose Martinez left us on December 21, 2017. He was also known by “Pepe”, Pep” and “Peperoni”. He fought a hard battle but in the end he was tired and just wanted to “rest”.

Pepe was born in La Piedad, Mexico on June 3, 1936 to Soledad Arias. He was raised in Mexico City, Mexico and came to the United States and worked for over 30 years at the Stockmen’s Hotel and Casino in the Maintenance Department.

Pepe married his first wife, Irma Castellanos and they had a child, Jose Carlos Martinez. They later divorced. His son Carlos was raised in Mexico and 22 years ago came back to the States with his wife and two small children to be closer to his dad. Pepe then met his current wife Dolores Martinez. They were together for 45 years and married for 22 years. They lived in Elko for over fifty years but then decided back in 2003 to move down south to Beaver Dam, Arizona. The warm weather was much better for them.

Pep was very special caring, loving husband and father. He took the father role to Dolores’s five children (two girls and 3 boys) when their own father had tragically died a year before. For a man to take on this journey of raising five children was admired by many. He didn’t look at them as his step-children, they were his kids. Pepe was a very proud man and he worked very hard. Pepe and Dolores always taught their kids to take pride in whatever they did in life, whether in school or in the real world of “working a job”. Although they were so far away, their love for family never wavered especially for their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Pepe leaves behind his wife Dolores Martinez, children, Carlos (Maricela) Martinez, Lidia Betancourt (Cris) Cortes, Rafael (Faith) Betancourt, Jr., Bessie (Celso) Salazar, Danny (Varmae) Betancourt, and Miguel (Chrisstan) Betancourt. Grand children: Jose Carlos and Lucero Martinez; Shania Marin and Nick Cortes; Rafael (Brandi) Betancourt III, Andre (Amanda) Betancourt, Jered Betancourt; Michelle (Jaime) Quintero, Adrian Salazar; Brandee Betancourt; Amaia (Vern) Gallegos, Mikayla and Bailey Betancourt. Great-grandchildren: D’Srey, K’iawna and Andres Gonzalez Cortes; Kaden and Kyra Betancourt, Teegan and Brantley Betancourt; Marco Cervantes, Izaac, Amaiyah, and Izabelle Quintero; Allie and Lillie Gallegos. Great-great-grandchildren: J’dynn and Easton Cervantes and a great-grandchild on the way.

He is preceded in death by his mother Soledad, brother Salvador “Chava”, niece Sylvita, nephew Javier and grand-daughter Stephanie Gonzalez.

Rosary and viewing will be at Burns Funeral Home on Thursday, December 28 from 6-8 p.m. and Mass will be at St. Joseph’s Church, in Elko at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 29th.
