OWYHEE — The Owyhee Combined School AISES Chapter raised $750 to help an elementary school in Desab, Haiti, which will be donated through the Stone By Stone organization.
The top classes in the American Indian Science and Engineering Society fundraiser were:
1st place: Ms. Rhoden’s third grade class with $166.07
2nd place: Mrs. Wood’s fifth-sixth grade class with $154.34
3rd place: Ms. Donnelson’s secondnd grade class with $103.58
The top three fundraising classes had the opportunity to spend a class period in the high school lab where they made slime with the help of high school students.
More contributions came from all the remaining classes, a high school lunch time food sale, and a generous donation from the school’s kindergarten teacher.
One hundred percent of the donations go directly to the school in Haiti. Although the Haitian government mandates that all students wear a uniform, have decent shoes, a backpack and pay tuition, the government does not provide support for the schools. Donations allow students to attend school without causing severe hardship for their families.
“The generosity of the students and staff at Owyhee Combined is truly outstanding,” said aide Myrna Hilderbrand. “A big thank you to all the students and teachers, and to all the parents who supported the fundraiser.”
