OWYHEE – For a third year the Owyhee High School Academic Olympic Quiz Team, under the direction of adviser Debra Shaffer, represented the school and division at the state academic quiz bowl held in Eureka. This year, the team went in second place behind Wells.

The final meet of the year which determined the places of the teams was held in Owyhee and included Wells, Jackpot, Spring Creek Christian Academy and Owyhee. The match was highly competitive and when the final points were tallied, only a point separated the finalists.

The quiz teams answer a variety of questions including math, history, government, language, foreign languages, literature and the different branches of science. Shaffer would like to thank all involved in the home meet: Jennifer Streeter for asking the questions; senior Kaylani Smartt, timer; and junior Macee McKinney, scorekeeper.

This year’s team consisted of seniors Lance Dick Jr., Rachel Gallego, Marco Ovando, Destany Sky Pete; juniors Marilyn Harney, Terry Howard, Bobby Kelly, Destiny Max; and sophomore Alejandra Dick.

Prior to the state meet, the quiz team held a match against the OCS teaching staff. Again, this was another highly competitive match and ended fairly evenly.

Congratulations to the outstanding scholars at Owyhee and all the schools that were represented at the state bowl.
