ELKO — Riverton and The Star Hotel are presenting the Riverton Home Town Hero Award every week for the basketball season. During halftime they recognize someone in the community for going above and beyond what is asked of them, presenting a $100 check to the organization of the recipient’s choice, and a $100 gift card to The Star Hotel.
The Jan. 26 recipients were Kim McKnight in Elko and Loretta Reed in Spring Creek.
Kim is married to Ben McKnight and they have four kids, Dayton, Nataliya, Emilyn and Payslie. Kim is from Elko and graduated from Elko High School. She coached cheerleading for 13 years. She is also involved with the Choraliers. Kim is also a Pep Club adviser. Kim said she loves being at the high school spending time and mentoring the kids she is around. She has chosen for Riverton to donate $100 to Elko Choraliers.
Loretta Reed has been married to Robert Reed for over 52 years; together they own Ruby Mountain Water. They have three children, Jake, Kristi and John; and nine grandchildren. Loretta was an English teacher at Elko High school for eight years and then helped open the Spring Creek High school in 1993, teaching there until she retired in 2015. Besides teaching English, Loretta was the yearbook adviser and she started the photography class. She stated that after her family, teaching was “the love of her life.” Loretta’s greatest satisfaction came from imparting her love of photography to her students and taking pride in their accomplishments. She loves hearing from former students, seeing them raising their families and following their careers. Loretta has chosen for Riverton to donate $100 to Boys & Girls Club of Elko.
