ELKO — An inmate booked into the Elko County Jail on Thursday, Sept. 10, for a warrant sneaked 6.6 grams of heroin onto the premises.
Undersheriff Clair Morris said Craig E. Smith, 22, of Elko, hid the opiate in his rectum.
It is unclear how he smuggled the drugs in. He may have swallowed them and retrieved them later, said Morris. They were enclosed in plastic.
Authorities in the jail were alerted to investigate the cell-block when another inmate quit breathing after ingesting heroin.
He has been released from the hospital and is back in custody.
Smith was taken to the hospital and the heroin was removed, said Morris.
He was initially in jail on a charge of failure to appear after bail for a felony crime.
Smith was arrested on Monday, Sept. 14, for giving false statement to or obstructing a public official, possession of a controlled substance by a documented prisoner, second-offense possession of a controlled substance, four counts of second-offense possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription and trafficking a controlled substance.
His bail was listed at $66,137.
