ELKO —The cremated remains of five veterans were escorted this morning to Fernley for interment at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The project was organized by the Missing In America Project and the Elko POW-MIA Awareness Association after the remains were discovered in the basement of Burns Funeral Home.

Motorcycle riders were escorted out of Elko this morning by law enforcement agencies. The interment was scheduled to take place at 2 p.m.

Dorothy Minor, Nevada director of the MIAP, said she attempted to contact the families of the five veterans and received no response.

Both Minor and Les Brown, commanding officer of the POW-MIA Elko Awareness Association, are appealing for assistance in locating and identifying any other veterans’ remains still in funeral homes.
