ELKO – A woman who was allegedly under the influence of an unknown substance tumbled to the ground Friday while resisting arrest.

According to Trooper Jim Stewart, the officer spotted a woman at 10:30 p.m. near Fifth and Wilson streets diagonally crossing the street on foot. The officer noticed that she was acting strangely and seemed to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

The officer asked Laura M. Skufca, 39, of Elko if she had been doing drugs and she told him no, said Stewart.

He placed one handcuff on Skufca but she began punching and kicking and both parties fell to the ground.

Stewart said Elko police officers then came to the scene and they assisted the trooper in taking Skufca into custody. No injuries were sustained during the scuffle.

Skufca was arrested for being a pedestrian crossing an area other than a crosswalk; using or being under the influence of a controlled substance; resisting a public officer; and committing battery on a protected person.

Bail was set at $26,255.
