ELKO — An Elko man was arrested Tuesday on charges of burglary at a Spring Creek home where he allegedly attempted to steal a gun safe.
Derek Wyatt, 33, was arrested for two counts of grand larceny of a gun and burglary while possessing a deadly weapon or gun.
Wyatt was identified as a suspect for a burglary that took place June 2 and admitted to trying to remove a gun safe that held a rifle and a pistol, according to Elko County Undersheriff Ron Supp.
The safe also contained two pellet guns but Wyatt did not receive additional gun theft charges for them since they are not considered firearms.
According to Supp, Wyatt knew the safe contained two firearms when he attempted to remove it from the Spring Creek home.
Supp said his department has a lot of success making an arrest after interviewing suspects in cases like this and pointed out that small details can help point them in the right direction of a suspect.
“That actually happens quite a bit once you develop a suspect,” he said. “Sometimes it’s fingerprint evidence, car tracks, footprints or maybe someone seeing someone in an area. Sometimes little things that people don’t even pay much attention to can solve a case.”
Wyatt’s bail was set at $90,000.
