Person engulfed in flame

City of Elko firefighters put out a blaze behind East End Mall during the noon hour Oct. 13, after a man engulfed in flames was spotted.

ELKO – A burning person was discovered at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the brush behind East End Mall.

“Basically a passerby -- who first thought he saw dust and realized it was smoke -- called dispatch,” Elko Police Capt. Ty Trouten said. “We have a couple of witnesses including one of the first officers on the scene who saw the subject in the fire and that they were overcome.”

According to Trouten, the unidentified person died at the scene.

The fire also burned a small section of land just off of Manzanita Drive.

Investigators are working the scene and hope to have more information soon.
