The Elko County Ham Operators would like to thank Barrick Goldstrike Mine, Mr. Lou Schack, Katie Neddenriep and Melanie Lawson from the Community Relations Department, as well as Lorraine in the warehouse for the generous donation of radio gear to our amateur radio group.
Barrick Goldstrike has done so much good for our community in so many ways and the donation of radio gear greatly helps to promote Amateur Radio, increasing our amateur pool and allowing more hams to be involved in the event of an emergency or disaster, and in particular an emergency or disaster where standard communication modalities might not be available.
Amateur Radio is available to help in communicating with our law enforcement and fire departments as well as passing emergency messages to and for civilians in the event of such a disaster or emergency.
Many of our younger generation have no idea what Amateur Radio is and Barrick’s generous donations greatly help us educate the public in what Amateur Radio (also known as ham radio) is all about.
Barrick Goldstrike gave radio equipment to our Elko County Ham Operators and Elko Amateur Radio Club, as well as to the radio club in Winnemucca. These clubs include members from Battle Mountain, Carlin, Wells, Spring Creek and Elko and this generous donation enables all these amateur radio members to benefit.
We would once again like to thank Mr. Schack, his staff and Barrick Goldstrike for their generosity and their commitment to our community.
