Editor: I was surprised to see the promotion of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada’s (PLAN) “Digging for the Truth: Gold Mining in Nevada” on the front page in the January 14th edition. Starting with the gold “outline” around the article (highlighting usually reserved for breaking news articles) and knowing the context of the presentation, I feel this was the greatest example of the Free Press’s complete disconnect with the local community to date.
First and foremost, this meeting took place in Las Vegas the day you printed the article so it does not qualify as a “local event notice” and the context of the notice does not present itself as news of any form. PLAN has long been an opponent of our area’s key industry, mining. PLAN’s own promotional statement for the event starts with “gold mining is one of the most destructive industries in the world.” PLAN is a primary backer of SJR15, the mining tax issue, and of creating the Margins Tax — another industry and business killer.
The featured speakers of the event, John Hadder, director for Great Basin Research Watch and Dr. Tom Myers, both lead groups who are against the existence of the mining industry as a whole. Finally, Bob Fulkerson, state director for PLAN, has for many years been one of the leading voice’s against mineral extraction, many times promoting excessive taxation and regulation that will drive the industry from our state completely and would cripple the economy of Northern Nevada.
