Son's homecoming surprises mom

ELKO — When Suzanne Williams of Spring Creek went to dinner Tuesday with her family, she didn’t suspect anything unusual.

In fact, she didn’t notice at first that her son, Phillip Williams, was waiting on her table.

“It didn’t even register,” she told the Elko Daily Free Press.

Phillip Williams, 18, returned Tuesday from San Antonio, where he was in Air Force training as an airman first class.

“He asked me to help him surprise our parents,” said Michelle Stepanek, Phillip’s sister. “It was hilarious. It was perfect.”

Although Suzanne Williams knew her son was coming home from the five-month training this week, she had been told it was Wednesday, not Tuesday.

Stepanek contacted Denny’s on Monday, and the restaurant gladly helped in her plan.

Phillip Williams dressed in a Denny’s uniform, complete with a name pin, Stepanek said.

The local POW*MIA chapter also assisted in the scheme, volunteering to videotape the experience.

“After this, I’m on leave for 10 days and go to the F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyo.,” Phillip Williams said.
