Federal aviation officials are asking southern Nevada residents to weigh in about proposals to redesign takeoff and landing routes in the skies around North Las Vegas, Henderson Executive and McCarran International airports. The Federal Aviation Administration says current routes are safe, but its Metroplex project aims to cut fuel costs for airlines, reduce pollution, improve pilot-and-controller communication and increase efficiency.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — U.S. aviation officials are inviting southern Nevada residents to comment about new flight paths that are due to begin in the Las Vegas area in 2020.

The Federal Aviation Administration says current routes are safe, but it plans to modernize takeoff and landing routes around McCarran International, North Las Vegas and Henderson Executive airports and Nellis Air Force Base.

The FAA has posted documents online about its Las Vegas Metroplex plan, and has scheduled public workshops beginning Dec. 9 at the Clark County Government Center in Las Vegas.

The plan is part of a sweeping “NextGen” Air Transportation System being rolled out nationally to cut airline fuel costs, reduce pollution, improve pilot-and-controller communication and increase efficiency.

Changes have drawn criticism and noise complaints in some other cities.
