OWYHEE – Entering the season after qualifying for the 1A state tournament last year, the new-look, younger Owyhee boys basketball team did its job in the season opener.

The Braves rolled to a 57-39 victory Friday at home over Rimrock (Idaho).

Owyhee built a 10-6 lead after the first period – junior Chance Cota scoring six points in the opening period.

In the second quarter, Owyhee scored the basketball with more balance.

Freshman Julian Dick put in five points in the second period, junior Ramon Cordova and freshman Desmond Hanchor each dropping four points.

At the break, Owyhee built a 25-18 lead.

In the third period, the Braves opened up the offense – posting their highest output of any quarter in the ballgame.

Owyhee scored 20 points in the frame – sophomore guard Clayton Cota putting in six points in the third — but Rimrock also experienced its most productive period with 15 points.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Braves led 45-33.

With the outcome still undetermined, Owyhee’s defense sealed Rimrock’s fate, allowing just six points once again – matching the game-low number from the first quarter.

The Braves scored 12 points in the final frame, rolling to a 57-39 victory with an 18-point cushion.

Cordova led the way for the balanced Braves with 13 points, joined in double digits by 11 points from Chance Cota.

Sophomore Rigo Cordova closed with eight points, all coming in the second half.

Clayton Cota, Dick and freshman Sequoia Roubideaux and Dick each finished with six points for Owyhee, Hanchor adding five.
