BUHL, Idaho – In the 44th annual Buhl Invitational, Elko earned nearly 87 percent of its points from two wrestlers.
The Indians placed 22nd out of 29-scoring teams with a total of 30 points, 26 points coming from senior Kevin Villegas and junior Carl Hansen.
Villegas scored 14 points for the Indians, finishing fourth in the 126-pound division with a 3-2 record – winning one match by pinfall and another by major decision.
After a bye in the first round, Villegas notched a 16-3 major-decision victory over L.J. Hadley of Emmett.
His only win by pin came in the quarterfinal over Challis’ Nicholas Dize, but Villegas lost his semifinal match to Destin Summers of Snake River by a score of 7-1.
From the consolation bracket, Villegas tallied a 5-2 decision over Teton’s Denton Moulton.
In the third-place match, Villegas lost a narrow, 4-2 decision to Caleb Norman of Sugar-Salem.
Hansen also took fourth place in the tournament, competing in the 170-pound class.
Like Villegas, he closed with a 3-2 record with one victory by major decision.
He began the tournament in the second round after a bye, defeating Kimberly’s Jake Hardy by a score of 10-3.
In the quarterfinal round, Hansen won a major-decision contest by a final tally of 15-2 against Nathan Pauls of Gooding.
Hansen was defeated by fall in his semifinal match at the 4:58 mark against Pete Bradshaw of Challis.
He bounced back with a 7-0 blanking of Sugar-Salem’s Conner Wood in the consolation semifinal, but Hansen was beaten by pinfall in the consolation championship in 1:49 by Raft River’s Traven Hansen.
The only other Elko wrestler who scored points for the Indians was freshman Lincoln Ratliff, who finished with a 1-2 record with one pin in the 138-pound division.
The Indians will be back in action Friday and Saturday during the 25th annual Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational.
