On July 13, the Nevada Department of Transportation will launch the next phase of construction to widen and improve U.S. 395 in the North Valleys.
Since 2023, crews have placed nearly three million pounds of reinforcing steel and 220,000 square yards of concrete pavement to widen and improve U.S. 395 from north McCarran Boulevard to Golden Valley Road. Construction on the current phase of the project will continue over coming months, creating one work zone for both phases of construction.
Meanwhile, beginning July 13, phase two will continue highway improvements northward to widen and improve U.S. 395 between Golden Valley Road and Stead Boulevard.
The approximately $127 million in improvements by contractor Ames Construction will enhance traffic mobility on the heavily traveled corridor.
With phase two construction scheduled to take place through early 2028, NDOT is encouraging drivers to sign up for traffic alerts:

Phase two lane and ramp closures
Beginning July 13 through early 2028: U.S. 395 between Golden Valley Road and Stead Boulevard
- Periodic lane shifts throughout construction.
- Overnight highway lane reductions, with U.S. 395 reduced to one lane in each direction 8 p.m.-5 a.m.
- Intermittent ramp closures 8 p.m.-5 a.m. Detour routes will be marked.
- Speeds will be reduced to 55 mph 24/7 through the work zone.
- Lanes periodically reduced on Lemmon Drive and Golden Valley Road underneath U.S. 395.
- For brief and limited phases of construction, there will be closures of Lemmon Drive and Golden Valley Road underneath U.S. 395 during overnight (8 p.m.-5 a.m.) and weekend hours (Fridays at 9 p.m. to Mondays at 5 a.m.). Only one interchange will be closed at a time.
- Construction schedule is subject to change.
Traffic volumes have increased from 45,000 per day in 2014 to 50,000 vehicles per day in 2025. The project will complete the multi-phase improvements to enhance traffic mobility and safety for the ever-growing North Valleys.
Project overview
- Add one additional lane to both northbound and southbound U.S. 395 between Golden Valley Road and Stead Boulevard.
- Add designated merging (auxiliary) lanes between each freeway ramp in both directions of U.S. 395 between Golden Valley Road and Lemmon Drive.
- Install new traffic signal system at Golden Valley Road interchange to replace the existing temporary signal system. The interchange will also be realigned, with two lanes to access southbound U.S. 395.
- Rehabilitate pavement on U.S. 395 in both directions between Golden Valley Road and Stead Boulevard.
- Construction of sound walls, retaining walls, lighting and intelligent transportation system upgrades and striping, roadside signs, landscape and aesthetic and drainage improvements.
- Wider highway shoulders will provide additional safety as well as room for enhanced incident management and roadside response.
Next year, NDOT will launch a separate project to improve North Virginia Street between McCarran Boulevard and Panther Valley to additionally enhance travel from Reno/Sparks to the North Valleys.
